皆様におかれましては、益々ご清栄のことと、お慶び申し上げます。今年は天候に恵まれて、桜の花を比較的永く楽しむことができたのではないでしょうか。桜を観るといつも素晴らしいと思うのとともに春が来た、さあ新年度も頑張っていこうという気持ちになります。私だけでなく、日本人にとっては何故か特別の感情が醸し出されるように思いますが如何でしょうか?
さて、1998 年に発足したゲノム創薬フォーラムは 2011年3月の東日本大震災での帰宅時 のご無理が災いし急逝された野口照久先生のご遺志を受け継いで、新井賢一先生を代表として、創薬だけでなくiPS 細胞の利用をはじめとする様々な医療分野への展開を考慮してゲノム創薬・医療フォーラムへ衣替えを致しました。
しかしながら、2018 年 4月に新井先生が思いもよらず急逝されました。約20年間にわたり、ゲノム創薬およびゲノム医療の分 野に少なからず貢献をしてきたフォーラムの存在意義を感じた有志によって、ここでフォ ーラムを終わりにするのではなく、従来のフォーラムは一旦終了するも、進歩を続ける情報 科学の手法も取り込んで、さらに発展した形で継続させるべくフォーラムを「ゲノム創薬・ 創発フォーラム」として新たな気持ちで立ち上げることに致しました。
新フォーラムの趣意書にありますが、創発とは部分の性質の単純な総和にとどまらない性質が全体として現れることを意味し、異なる分野の専門家が議論することにより、所定の意図を超えたイノベーションが誘発されることを意味するもので、これは野口照久先生が創薬科学を定義した際 に用いた学融(金属が融合すると全く性質の異なる合金になることを例に)のサイエンスに 通じるものです。できるだけ異なる分野の方が大勢参加することにより、思いがけない発見 や発想が得られ、日本の創薬や医療の分野で大きく貢献できることを期待し、さらには日本の科学全般に活力を齎していきたいと願っています。

Due to the favorable weather, I assume you enjoyed cherry blossoms this year longer than usual. When I see cherry blossoms, I always feel wonderful, and the idea is conveyed to me that Spring has come, and I become newly committed to do my best again in the new fiscal year. I wonder if cherry blossoms bring something special not only to me, but to many of you as well.
The genome drug discovery forum was founded in 1998. Inheriting the spirit of Dr. Teruhisa Noguchi, who passed away after a difficult return to home on the day of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Dr. Kenichi Arai led the Forum under the title “Genome Drug Discovery and Medical Forum”. During his tenure, its scope spread beyond drug discovery to a variety of medical therapies, including iPS cell therapy.
Unfortunately, Dr. Arai suddenly passed away in April 2018. A group of members who felt that the Forum has brought significant benefits to genome drug discovery and medicine over the last 20 years reestablished the forum under the new title “Genome Drug Discovery & Emergence Forum”. These members intend to terminate its conventional style and develop more technology driven methods for contributing to the advancement of information science.
As mentioned in the aim statement of the new forum, emergence (So-hatsu) means the overall result exceeds the expected outcome, and is not simply the sum of the added parts. We added “emergence” to the forum name to evoke the concept of synergistic innovation from the gathering of experts in different fields beyond the sum of their individual contributions. This is an intellectual variation on the concept of metal alloys possessing entirely different properties than the individual metals (Gaku-yu). Dr. Noguchi used this word in his definition of the science of drug discovery. Gathering many people from many different fields may lead to unexpected discoveries and ideas that will contribute to drug discovery and medical therapy. In this way, we hope to provide a vital stimulus to scientific endeavors in Japan.
